Thrifty Car Rental is part of the holding company Dollar-Thrifty Automotive Group, along with the Dollar Rent a Car company. The company was founded in 1958 and was acquired by Chrysler in 1990, when it was also combined with Dollar Rent a Car. Its headquarters is in Tulsa, Oklahoma and it has over 1,000 locations in 70 countries all over the world in areas like North, Central and South America, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, the Caribbean, Asia and the Pacific. Some of these locations are corporately owned while franchise owners control others. Thrifty is part of both the local and airport car rental markets.
The Blue Chip Express Rental Program is a free program for Thrifty customers which enables them to expedite car rentals at specific U.S. and Canada locations. The program also makes the return process faster. It is free to enroll in the program and there are no fees or contracts involved. In addition, members of the Blue Chip program gain access to several rewards programs. One rewards program, Blue Chip Rewards, earns members free days at Thrifty; the other earns members rewards credits when they park at participating Thrifty airport parking locations. Members also have profiles that make renting and picking up cars a much quicker and have the option of adding airline miles with airlines like American Airlines, Air Canada, Aeromexico, Alaska Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines, Qantas, and United Airlines.
The Wild Car program ensures customers low rates on mid-size or larger vehicles, like large cars, minivans, and SUVs. Guarantees that come with the program include rates lower than what customers would normally pay for a mid-size, a mid-size or larger car, pickup locations that determine the vehicle at the time of pickup, a vehicle with at least five seatbelts, and a vehicle with enough room for two or more pieces of luggage to accommodate travelers and large groups.
The entire Thrifty fleet was mainly comprised of Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep vehicles prior to 2009, since Chrysler acquired the company in 1989. Since 2009, Thrifty has also rented Ford, General Motors, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia and several other brands. Thrifty offers a range of sizes, from economy to mid-size to full-size cars. SmartBiz is a streamlined version of SmartBusiness, specifically designed for small businesses. The benefits are similar to those of SmartBusiness, but with SmartBiz customers get 150 miles per rental day, no minimum financial commitment, and free enrollment. Businesses can also get multi-month rentals if they need to rent for longer than a month, even if it’s up to 11 months. All business customers have to do is use their existing corporate accounts and there is no need to return the vehicle until the rental is complete, and charges are automatically billed each month to their credit card or Thrifty billing account. Travel Smart offers business promotions and partnerships to get businesses deals with industrial supply companies, hotels and airlines.
Thrifty has government programs for U.S. and Canadian government customers, non-fed government employees, and veterans. United States military members and federal government employees gain access to promotions like gift cards to restaurants, free upgrades and more. The company offers special rates for official and leisure travel as well as discounted rates for weekly and monthly rentals. Government rates are good outside of the U.S. as well as inside and no credit card is necessary when traveling on official business. All that is required is a copy of official travel orders and a cash deposit for the estimated amount of the rental.
