Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) refers to a class of unique soluble non-digestible carbohydrates (ie. sugars) that occur naturally in a wide variety of edible foods throughout the plant kingdom and contain almost no calories. Since they are non-digestible, they pass through the human digestive tract largely unaltered. Their uniqueness manifests upon reaching the colon. In the colon, fructooligosaccharides are selectively utilized by the beneficial bacteria (known as bifidobacteria or bifidus) for growth and proliferation. A healthy microbial population influences digestion and absorption of nutrients, detoxification and elimination processes, and the immune system of the host. Thus, fructooligosaccharides can provide important health benefits to individuals with less than optimal microbial flora. Whereas beneficial bacteria such as acidophilus and bifidus are frequently referred to as probiotics, fructooligosaccharides, which enhance and promote the growth of the probiotics are frequently referred to as prebiotics.

Everyone knows what it means to be overweight. From early age on, children can tell the difference between "fat" and "thin" people. They also get the clear message that fat people are apt to be less popular. Body weight is one of the most basic issues of human life. Self-esteem, acceptance among peers and perhaps lifelong success or failure are all tied to our physical appearance. Medically speaking, not all overweight people are obese. Obesity is defined as weight that exceeds 15 percent of normal weight for height and body type. "Morbid" obesity exceeds 20 percent of optimum weight. An obese or overweight person is at high risk for a number of serious health problems, including heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, varicose veins, dementia, psychological stress, depression, osteoarthritis, high cholesterol, and diabetes.

The objective of a recent study was to examine the effects of oligofructose supplementation on body weight and satiety hormone concentrations in overweight and obese adults. The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study included 48 otherwise healthy adults with a BMI greater than 25. The subjects were then randomly assigned to receive either 21 grams of oligofructose or a placebo. The results of the study revealed that those in the oligofructose group lost on average 1.03 kg of body weight, while people in the placebo group gained an average of 0.45 kg. The subjects receiving the prebiotic supplement, oligofructose, reported a reduction in self-reported caloric intake, in addition to decreased levels of glucose and a mirroring effect on insulin concentrations although no effects were observed on satiety hormones. The supplement was well-tolerated among the subjects based on a visual analog scale designed to assess side effects. These results demonstrate that supplementation with oligofructose, independently from any lifestyle change is able to decrease body weight, primarily by loosing fat mass, and can help manage caloric intake in overweight and obese adults.1
