Blue peels are a medium depth chemical peel which are intended to reduce or remove wrinkles, age spots and other discoloration, and some scarring, while rejuvenating and refreshing the appearance and texture of skin, reducing pore size and leaving skin softer and smoother. Blue peels are a more effective type of peel than micropeels, which are considered a superficial peel, but not as effective as some of the deeper chemical peels . In consequence, they require more recovery time than micropeels or “mini” peels, and less recovery than the deepest chemical peel treatments. Blue peels are not intended for the treatment of so-called “dynamic” wrinkles, those which occur as a result of facial expression, including frown lines and crow’s feet. During the blue peel procedure, your skin care specialist will apply a layer of special chemicals designed to treat skin to a specified depth. Blue peels contain a special agent which turns blue when the peel has reached its maximum efficacy, to aid specialists in determining the amount of time the chemical should remain on the skin. The blue agent will also turn the treatment area blue for a few days following treatment in most individuals, and many individuals opt to have a brief absence from work until the color fades. At about 4 to 5 days following the treatment, flaking and peeling of the treatment area will begin, continuing for about 7 to 9 days. For this reason, most individuals do not undergo peels within 2 to 3 weeks of any special event. Some individuals choose to have their blue peel repeated after 6 months to ensure optimal results are achieved. Mini peels may be used subsequently to maintain those results. Your blue peel treatment may vary based on the area being treated, but usually will run from $350 to $500.
